This month’s people that “echo” choice is a woman who has dedicated her life to helping families and children in Santa Cruz County. Silvia Brown is the
Program Services Coordinator for Child-Parent Centers. She started working at the Nogales Head Start were she worked as a teacher for 23 Years. She was later promoted to Center Manager where she worked in this position for 9 years before moving to the administrative office in Tucson, Arizona. She has been working for Head Start for more than 44 years. Mrs.Brown was recently recognized for her work by the Office of the Santa Cruz Superintendent Alfredo I. Velasquez.
“I am very fortunate to have worked in the Head Start program for so many years. The Preservice, In-Service Professional Development training, and conferences have helped me not just in my professional growth but also in my personal growth, said Mrs. Brown.
Silvia Brown is a Nogales Native. She attended local elementary schools and graduated from Nogales High School.Mrs. Brown holds an Associate’s of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education. The agency has provided her with an array of opportunities for continued education throughout the years.
She is an active community member who has been involved in numerous local community groups including the VFW, Ladies Auxiliary, Domestic Violence Advocate, and Local Elks Club.
“I have always had a yearning to work with children. I saw the opportunity to come into a program that has a vision of providing quality services, which helps children and families,” said Mrs. Brown.
Head Start is a non- profit organization with no cost to families.
They offer comprehensive services, quality education to children and parents. They provide nutritious meals and snacks. health screenings, mental health referrals, parent engagement and provide other resources as needed for families. They currently serve 311 children and families in Santa Cruz County.
“I am very proud of the wonderful work we do for our children and families in Santa Cruz County. Everyone in this organization has provided me the opportunity to advance in my career. I have been very lucky to be working with great supervisors who have believed in me and have been outstanding role models. There are wonderful people throughout this agency. This is the reason Head Start has been, so successful for more than 50 years,” said Program Services Coordinator, Silvia Brown.
Mrs. Brown has 3 grown children, Samantha, Kevin and Brian with her soulmate Peter. She has 2 grandchildren, Aidan and Keegan. “My mother has been my inspiration throughout my career. Unfortunately, she is not with me anymore. I take the lessons learned from her and have applied them to all aspects of my life. My mother, Victoria was a pillar for me and the community,” said Brown.
