Rio Rico High School Celebrates A+ Designation

Rio Rico High School rolled out the red carpet for students, teachers, families and dignitaries as they celebrated their recent A+ School of Excellence™ Award by the Arizona Educational Foundation (AEF).

Arizona Educational Foundation Director, Lee Nelson, presented the award to Principal Shelly Vroegh. Guest speakers included SCVUSD Governing Board President Maria Neuman, Santa Cruz County Superintendent of Schools Alfredo Velasquez, Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada, and SCVUSD Superintendent David Verdugo.  Joining the celebration were Nogales Mayor John Doyle and members of the parent review committee:  Patty Molina, Felicia Leon, Hank Thysell, Monica Rodriquez, Frank Lopez, Marcela Lopez, Maria Ojeda, Eufrocina Marquez, and Yolanda Fuentes.

“This [application] process is about looking inward. Looking at what you’ve dreamed, and what you’ve achieved,” said Nelson.  “At Arizona Educational Foundation, our message is for you, students.  We encourage you to dream.  Dream now.  Dream big.  Dream always.  We want you to realize your dreams.  We need you to go far.”

RRHS is one of 39 Arizona schools to receive this distinguished award from the Arizona Educational Foundation for the 2016-17 school year. Applicant schools are evaluated in the areas of student focus and support, school culture, active teaching and learning, curriculum, leadership, community and parent involvement and assessment data.

“Our success is due to our dedicated teachers and staff who work tirelessly to make this a great school, and to our students who truly care about their school,” said RRHS Principal Shelly Vroegh.  “Together we’ve earned this remarkable A+ distinction for our community.”

Rio Rico High School now becomes the 4th of five Santa Cruz Valley Unified School District No. 35 schools holding this title, joining San Cayetano Elementary, Coatimundi Middle, and Calabasas Schools.
