Thirty-five students from Rio Rico High School (RRHS) were recently recognized for their outstanding academic achievement in the Cambridge International Examinations program, the Advanced Placement Program, or for achieving the status of “Candidates for the Grand Canyon Diploma.”
Thirteen students received prestigious awards from Cambridge International Examinations to acknowledge their outstanding performance in the May 2018 Cambridge examination series, an exam given to students in over 40 countries around the world.
Two students received the highest scores in the United States, scoring above all other US students taking the exam. Receiving the highest award based on results from the Chemistry exam, is Matthew Gray, junior. This is the second consecutive year for Gray. In 2017, he received “Top in Country” for biology. Abigail Espinoza-Cervantes, junior, received “Top in Country” award for Literature.
Students take exams in three or four subject areas, and are awarded a grade from “A” through “G” based on their performance on each exam.
The “Cambridge Scholar Award with Distinction” is awarded to students that earn an “A” on three or more of their exams. The following RRHS students earned this award:

The “Cambridge Scholar Award with Merit,” is awarded to students that earn at least a B on three or more of their exams. For example, a student could earn an “A” on three exams and a “B” on one; or, a “B” on all four exams. The following students earned this award:

Seven RRHS seniors received the highest AP Scholar Awards. Kaitlyn Naff, Diego Soto, and Esteban Urena were deemed an AP Scholar with Honors, an award granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Alan Camarillo, Jeanette Chavez Save, Alejandra Guzman, and Samantha Schadler were deemed an AP Scholar, the award granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams.
Fifteen juniors were recognized as “Candidates for the Grand Canyon Diploma.” These students received qualifying marks on their Cambridge exams, allowing them to receive this diploma after they successfully complete an Economics course. The Grand Canyon High School Diploma is a valid, recognized high school diploma available to Arizona students who demonstrate college and career readiness in all core subject areas before they leave high school.
