Special Olympics Games 2013

Nogales Infantil hosted this year’s Special Olympics on November 8, 2013 at Pierson Field. This is the forth year these non-profit organizations hosted the event, which each year seems to have more participants from Santa Cruz County and from Nogales, Sonora, Mexico.
The event began at 9 a.m. with the singing of the U.S. and Mexican National Anthems, and continued with introductory speeches in memory of Rosa Elena “Role” Suarez that marked the start of the competitions. Special needs children from around the area then competed in a variety of athletic challenges. Medals and recognitions where awarded during the time of the competition for children, who won first, second or third place.
The event had several supporters that contributed to make the competition possible. Nogales Unified School District provided the space for the event at Pierson Field in front of it’s district building and the local McDonalds donated the meals, Dina Sanches from Carondelet Hospital donated the medals to all the participants as well the support of Sheriff Tony Estrada and Santa Cruz County Superintendent of School Alfredo I. Velasquez.
