After seven weeks of hard work and dedication, 24 high school students and their families will celebrate Mariposa Community Health Center’s (MCHC) Summer Youth Institute (SYI) graduation ceremony on July 21st at the Rio Rico Community Center. During these seven weeks, students received trainings in a variety of topics such as HIV/AIDS, Teen Pregnancy Prevention, Sexually Transmitted Infections, Teen Dating Violence, Substance Abuse Awareness and much more.
This is also the first year that a former SYI participant is now coordinating the program. Ryann Quick participated in SYI 2008 and worked for Mariposa Community Health Center as a Teen Health Facilitator during her sophomore, junior, and senior year. She is also a recipient of the Mariposa Community Health Center scholarship which helped her further her education at the University of Arizona to receive her Bachelor of Science in Public Health in May 2015.
SYI was established in 2002 and with this new group of graduates, we will have seen 393 students participate in this program. These proud new graduates are now certified as Teen Health Facilitators and are ready to educate their peers about how to be healthy and the dangers of risky behaviors.
The application process for SYI 2017 will begin again in January 2017. For more information on SYI, please contact Ryann Quick at MCHC’s Community Health Services Department at (520) 375-6050.
